Making the Switch to Sustainable Awards

How Midton helped Thinkbox transform its TV Planning Awards using recycled acrylic, combining bold design, craftsmanship and a more sustainable approach.

Thinkbox is the UK’s marketing organisation for commercial television, helping advertisers and agencies get the best from TV in all its forms. Its annual TV Planning Awards celebrate outstanding creativity and effectiveness in television advertising. Case Study_ Thinkbox – Making t…

In 2022, Thinkbox approached Midton to manufacture a collection of bold, Pantone-matched awards that reflected the personality and visual identity of the event.

When Thinkbox returned the following year, we saw an opportunity to take the awards in a new direction: could we retain their premium appearance while making them more sustainable?

The answer was our Remade – Bijou recycled acrylic material.

The Challenge

For Thinkbox, moving towards a more sustainable award was important, but not at the expense of design.

The TV Planning Awards needed to remain colourful, contemporary and premium. The challenge was therefore to introduce recycled material while maintaining the quality and visual impact associated with the existing awards. Case Study_ Thinkbox – Making t…

Our brief was clear: create a sustainable bespoke award that looked every bit as considered and desirable as the original.

The Solution: Remade – Bijou

To demonstrate what was possible, we presented Thinkbox with samples and imagery from Midton’s Remade material range.

We proposed Remade – Bijou, a handcrafted material created using 20–25 mm recycled acrylic granulate. The recycled acrylic pieces are tumbled with pigments to create a distinctive finish, meaning the recycled material itself becomes part of the design rather than something that needs to be hidden.

The material proved particularly suited to Thinkbox’s identity.

Its fragmented, almost jewel-like appearance created depth and variation throughout each award, while the different colours allowed the collection to retain the vibrant character of the TV Planning Awards.

Rather than sustainability restricting the design, it gave the awards a new visual identity.

From Acrylic Waste to Sustainable Awards

The finished collection demonstrates how recycled acrylic can be transformed into something designed to be celebrated and kept.

Each award combines Midton’s acrylic manufacturing expertise with the distinctive characteristics of recycled material, creating a collection that feels premium while making more considered use of material.

The result is a series of colourful sustainable awards in which no two pieces have exactly the same visual character.

As the group photograph on page one shows, the varied blue, orange, red, yellow, green, pink and purple finishes work particularly well as a collection, while the event photograph on page three demonstrates how striking the individual award remains in its real-world setting.

The Result

Thinkbox successfully made the transition to recycled acrylic without losing the bold aesthetic of its awards.

The finished pieces retained the premium appearance of the original concept while introducing recycled material and a distinctive new finish. Case Study_ Thinkbox – Making t…

For Midton, the project demonstrates an important principle behind our approach to sustainable manufacturing:

Sustainability doesn’t have to mean compromising on design.

By considering material choice as part of the creative process, recycled acrylic can become a defining feature of an award rather than simply an environmental alternative.

Thinkbox’s TV Planning Awards demonstrate how sustainable awards can still be colourful, beautifully crafted and visually distinctive.
