Midton’s Role in The Dalmore Luminary Collection – Third Instalment

Background
The Dalmore Luminary Collection is renowned for its dedication to excellence and innovation, merging the art of whisky-making with visionary design. The third instalment in this series is a testament to this ethos, featuring a groundbreaking collaboration between The Dalmore, V&A Dundee, and the renowned architectural firm Zaha Hadid Architects. The focal point of this release was a unique sculptural form designed by architect Melodie Lang serving as both a celebration of the whisky and a work-of-art in its own right.

Midton’s Long-standing Partnership with The Dalmore

Midton’s flair and limitless passion for creativity has a deep-rooted relationship with The Dalmore, so it was a natural fit for this project. Known for our expertise in crafting high-quality acrylic pieces, Midton has been involved in producing a broad range of limited-edition whisky cases for The Dalmore over the years. Our commitment to quality and innovation has made us an invaluable partner in bringing The Dalmore’s visions to life.

Early Involvement & Collaboration
Recognising the importance of early collaboration, The Dalmore brought Midton into the project from the outset. This allowed for a considered exploration of form and feasibility, with Creative Director Craig Cameron providing guidance on the opportunities and limitations of acrylic production. Acrylic was selected as the primary material for the understudy sculptures due to its versatility and its ability to mirror the clarity of the main glass sculpture, while offering a wider range of colour and reflective effects.

Challenges and Innovation in Acrylic Production
The sculptural form by Melodie Lang and the team at Zaha Hadid Architects pushed the limits of acrylic moulding, demanding new techniques and exceptional precision throughout production. Its complex geometry, combined with subtle colour and reflective qualities, required innovation, control, and consistency at every stage.

Early moulding attempts fell short of the required standards, but through determination, testing, and careful refinement, we developed a solution that achieved the necessary accuracy and surface finish—meeting the expectations of all involved.

The Final Outcome
The acrylic pieces produced by Midton were not mere replicas but true understudies to the leading glass sculpture. They offered a unique opportunity to realise the design vision in a range of colour tones that resonated with each stakeholder, adding depth and variety to the overall presentation of the Luminary Collection.

The successful completion of this project further solidified our reputation as a leader in acrylic production and a trusted partner for The Dalmore. The final sculptures not only met but exceeded expectations, demonstrating the power of collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Final Note

Midton’s involvement in the third instalment of the Dalmore Luminary Collection highlights the importance of early collaboration, technical expertise, and a willingness to innovate. By working closely with The Dalmore and Zaha Hadid Architects, we were able to overcome significant challenges and contribute to a project that beautifully merges the worlds of whisky and art. This case study serves as an example of how local partnerships can produce world-class results, further cementing the legacy of both The Dalmore and Midton in the realms of luxury and design.
