In 2020, Bouke de Vries participated in an exhibition with many global artists. ‘30 Pieces’ (2020), takes inspiration from this and the artist’s long standing fascination with historical ceramics, alongside his investigation of art as a ‘memory vessel’. The optical clarity and translucence of the acrylic within these sculptures allow the porcelain’s history to shine through.

To create ‘30 Pieces’ (2020), fragments of an 18th century Chinese porcelain vase from the Qing Dynasty have been cast in acrylic, with Bouke comparing the sculpture to being “like a fly trapped in amber”. The translucent sculpture is itself modeled after the original porcelain vase. For the artist, “crystalizing these porcelain fragments relates to the way memory captures a precise historical moment”.

Ocean Atlas, the world’s largest underwater sculpture is found just off the coast of Nassau.

Forged from sustainable, pH-neutral materials designed to kickstart local coral growth, Ocean Atlas is a monumental public sculpture submerged five metres beneath the sea, and an environmental gesture intended to portray the positive potential of human interaction with the natural world.

Following a week long, delicate casting process, this encapsulated piece made its way through to our CNC milling department to apply the 3D water texture to the top surface. This was an element that was of huge importance to Jason. Once polished, stunning ripples of light cast over the sculpture, mimicking the waves in the Bahamas - creating a feel of the original Ocean Atlas.

“Beauty exists in the expired and discarded”

Christopher Kane’s 2016 Autumn/Winter collection, ‘Lost and Found’, explored the ideas of discarded beauty and reused materials. The designer approached Midton to create a breathtaking point-of-sale installation, featuring more than 100 ‘lost and found’ objects captured in cubes for Selfridges’ Oxford Street store in London. These objects varied from dead insects, to this dried rose. This was a branding project taken to an entirely new level.
